In some mythical world, before getting kids off to school, I’d do it all: An early-morning HIIT class, a shower, actual clothes, maybe even makeup. But in the real world, many days I come home from the gym and I’m welcomed by small people who are awake too early, lunches to pack and breakfasts to make. Then I hustle them to the bus stop, still in my workout wear, unsure of whether or not my son has brushed his teeth.
The morning is a whirlwind. With that wardrobe change by the wayside, often, my clothing ends up multitasking like I do. Enter prAna, a sustainable lifestyle clothing brand that creates versatile, eco-friendly pieces that allow me to go from my workout to whatever adventure the day may bring. With classy and stylish pieces that can be worn at the gym, work or running around town, prAna clothing is perfect for all of us busy moms whose day is a mix of work and play. For me, an AM workout isn’t drudgery, it’s energizing and motivational. It wakes me up and prepares me to tackle my day with enthusiasm, and it’s not something I’m ready to sacrifice for the sake of looking more put-together. So I’ve discovered that having key quality pieces in my wardrobe help me simplify getting ready for the day and maaaay just help me achieve that unicorn status of working out AND looking like I got ready for the day.
A great pair of fitness tights is my wardrobe workhorse. Half the time, tights take me from an early morning gym session to getting my kids off to school to running errands around town. The ideal tights pair function and fashion. I put the prAna Caraway Performance Tight to the test in weightlifting group fitness classes, during an outdoor run and, of course, playing around with some fun lakeside yoga. (A huge thanks to Lisa M. Grace Photography for collaborating on this post with me and for these beautiful images!)
In all my activities, there was no need to break my stride to tug the tights back into place. The second-skin super soft fabric moved with me during back-bends as well as deadlifts. The moisture-wicking material offered comfortable compression throughout the day. The black birdeye-print tights I selected are made of 94 percent recycled polyester and jacquard, reducing environmental impact. While reviewing the brand, I was impressed to learn about prAna’s commitment to suststainability. The company seeks to use materials from sustainable sources, is committed to treating all workers fairly and shares about its processes in order to improve the industry. PrAna uses organic cotton, recycled wool, hemp, recycled polyester and responsible down. Materials are bluesign certified, meeting the highest environmental and human safety standards. When considering that these clothing items come with a higher price tag than many other pieces in my closet, I have to also consider the care that goes into making them.
I love how these high-waisted tights have a wide waistband with a drawstring inside, enabling me to adjust the waist to the perfect fit for my body. (I normally wear a small, but in these pants, I sized up to a medium. My philosophy with high-waisted pants is that I’d rather be able to cinch the pants in more tightly than risk the possibility of them squeezing at my waist at the end of the day.) I’m more of a HIIT, weights and yoga girl than a runner, but I wanted to also note a few features for all the running ladies out there. There’s a hidden mesh pocket inside the waistband for storing a key and reflective taping on the outside ankle seam, a nice feature for night runs!
The second piece of clothing I received was prAna’s Deedra Sweater Tunic. I fell for this piece right away when browsing online because I had nothing in my closet in this gorgeous rich auburn hue. When I received this organic cotton mid-weight sweater in the mail, I wanted to snuggle it. (Is that weird?) The color just speaks autumn to me, and the knit is varied throughout the garment, making it one of the most unique items in my closet. (See the amazing textures in the photo below.)
The tunic-length of this sweater makes it a perfect partner for even light leggings, since the garment completely covers my behind. While a tunic sweater has the potential to be heavy, the weight of the knit and the side slits provide for movement. This sweater is going to be on regular rotation in my closet throughout fall and winter months.
